Kentucky Payroll Requirements: What Employers Need to Know in 2026

Kentucky payroll involves both a flat state income tax and a significant network of local occupational taxes that apply in many cities and counties. The state income tax rate is a flat 4.0% on all taxable wages, administered by the Kentucky Department of Revenue. Employers file the quarterly K-1 return to remit state income tax withheld. Final paycheck timing in Kentucky requires that the final wages be paid on the next regular payday following the employee's last day of work, whether the separation is a discharge or a voluntary resignation. Kentucky does not require same-day payment on discharge. New hire reporting must be submitted within 20 days of hire to the Kentucky New Hire Reporting Center. Required information includes the employee's name, address, Social Security number, date of hire, and the employer's name, address, and federal EIN.
